JW Foster was appointed to be Mayor in August of 2016 after the resignation of the previous Mayor.
JW had been serving on the City Council since 2011 and had served on the Planning Commission since 2006.
Mayor Foster and his wife Nicki have lived in Yelm since 1996, and in Thurston County since 1988. They raised four children in Yelm, all graduating from Yelm High School.
JW served in the Marine Corps for five years after high school, trained as an 0311/0341/0151 and served as Mountaineering Instructor at the Marine Corps' Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, CA. Sgt. Foster was honorably discharged in 1979.
He then used the GI Bill to attend Paramedic School in Los Angeles, and went on to serve 34 years in the Fire Service, retiring from the Tumwater Fire Department in 2013.
JW has been involved in the Yelm community in many ways: coaching youth sports teams, volunteering with the Yelm Community Schools Career and Technical Education program, volunteering with the Lions Club, and serving on the Dollars for Scholars committee. He currently serves as Board President of the Nisqually Land Trust.
