Volunteer(s)

Students may inquire about exploring careers in municipal government as part of their culminating project, community service requirements for graduation, or simply to learn more about how the City works.

All volunteers are subject to the personnel policies of the City, all hours worked must be outside regular school hours for that student, and every volunteer must agree to meet the requirements imposed by Yelm Community Schools to participate in the program.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

The City of Yelm utilizes the services of Public Safety Testing for individuals interested in pursuing a career with the Yelm Police Department as an Entry Level Officer only.  Public Safety Testing administers a written and physical test for entry level applicants.  Lateral Positions are all processed directly through the City of Yelm Civil Service Commission and all applications are made directly through the City.  Testing for a Lateral Police Officer position will consist of an oral board and Chief's interview.  If you have additional questions or concerns about this process, please contact the City of Yelm Civil Service Examiner at 360-458-8437, or click here to email.

  • Reserve Police Officer
    The Yelm Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position(s) of Reserve Police Officer. Selected applicants would begin the Reserve Police Academy in  2019. Successful applicants will need to complete a thorough background investigation which includes, but is not limited to, a Polygraph and Psychological examination.  Applications can be obtained and submitted at the Yelm Police Department front desk, Monday-Friday, at 206 McKenzie Avenue SE, Yelm WA.
  • Police Volunteer
    The Yelm Police Department is looking for part-time volunteers to serve in a non-sworn capacity to assist the Department. 

    Candidates that are accepted into the program will go through training specific to their duties and responsibilities. Training will be just a few evenings over a couple week time period and when completed, will provide the volunteer with knowledge on how to be a valuable resource for the department and the city. 
     
    Candidates may serve in the capacity as court room security, identifying parking violations, conducting vacation house checks, providing security in local parks and trails, and possibly court transports of prisoners, to just mention a few. 

    The ideal candidate would be someone with plenty of free time, that is passionate about the community and wants to serve in a position to give back. Applications can be picked up and turned in at the Yelm Police Department. We are looking for at least 6 qualified applicants prior to the beginning of training.
